Molecular Order Determines Gas Transport through Smectic Liquid Crystalline Polymer Membranes with Different Chemical Compositions

چکیده

Amorphous polymers are often used for gas separation but have a trade-off between permeability and selectivity. Here, the effect of chemical composition temperature on solubility in well-ordered LC polymer membranes is investigated. Membranes with various compositions monomethacrylate (M1) crown ether functionality to enhance CO2 smectic diacrylate (M2) cross-linker were fabricated, while all having same order (smectic C) alignment (planar). Single sorption permeation data show 30 wt % M1 higher coefficient compared without M1, which results For that contain more than decreasing layer spacings lead reduced solubilities result lower permeabilities additional selectivity gain toward CO2. The demonstrated by comparing single below above Tg membranes. diffusion increases increasing content leading selectivities. These not only also spacing structures determines performance

Frustrated molecular packing in highly ordered smectic phase of side-chain liquid crystalline polymer with rigid polyacetylene backbone.

Using poly(5-{[(4'-heptoxy-4-biphenylyl)carbonyl]oxy}-1-pentyne) as an example, we demonstrate the incorporative accommodation of the rigid polyacetylene backbones and the mesogenic pendants, which leads to a highly ordered smectic (Sm) phase with a frustrated structure. The polymer exhibits a recognizable sheetlike molecular shape due to its rigid backbone and relatively short spacer (three me...

Perhydroazulene-based liquid-crystalline materials with smectic phases

New liquid-crystalline materials with a perhydroazulene core were synthesized and the stereochemistry of these compounds was investigated. The mesomorphic properties of the new LC compounds were investigated by differential scanning colorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. We report here on the LC properties of nonchiral materials, which predominantly exhibit smectic ph...

Electrohydrodynamic Instabilities in the Liquid Crystalline Phases with Smectic Ordering

An investigation has been made of the frequency characteristics of the threshold voltage of domain instabilities induced by an electric field in both homogeneously and homeotropically oriented liquid crystal layers. The mesogens had the nematic and smectic A phases and their anisotropy of the electrical conductivity changed its sign at the critical temperature somewhat above the nematic-smectic...

Photoinduced Molecular Reorientation and Relaxation in a Liquid Crystalline Polymer

In this paper we present a study of photoinduced eeects, including molecular relaxation in a side chain liquid crystalline polymer. In particular, we have studied relaxation phenomena using Ellipsometry and Photoinduced Birefringence in pump-probe experiments, which were carried out as a function of temperature, optical pump intensity and sample preparation and history. Two speciic areas were i...
